There is a great spiritual battle that is raging all around us. And in our own strength we will be defeated. That is why God has given us what we need to live a victorious life. But all too often, we dont take full advantage of everything that is at our disposal. We need to be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might!
We are commanded to put on the whole armor of God, and the very first piece that we are told to put on is the belt of truth. Just as a soldier's belt held all of his armor together and in place, it is truth that holds our spiritual armor in place. If we don't study and know the truth, then it leaves the rest of our armor vulnerable.
Our hearts are vulnerable to attack. To combat that, we are told to put on the breastplate of righteousness. Now we know that it is not our own righteousness, because all of our righteousness is like filthy rags. We are told to put on the Lord Jesus Christ.
We have been commanded by our Savior to go and tell others the good news of the gospel. One of the best things to keep us from falling into sin is telling others about the sacrifice that Jesus made for our sins. Do you feel like sin is getting the victory over you? Go out and tell someone about Jesus today!
The shield defended its bearer from all kinds of attacks. The shield that God has given to us to defend against Satan's attacks is faith. Many people have the wrong idea about what faith is, and that leaves them open to attack. But when we fully understand faith, we are shielded from the fiery darts of the wicked.
The helmet of salvation protects our minds from a very specific attack. That attack has to do with salvation. Many people have doubts about their salvation, which keeps them from growing in their walk with the Lord and in their effectiveness for Him. We must get this matter settled if we are to be victorious in our Christian life.
So far we have looked at defensive armor, but now we turn our attention to the offensive weapons that God has given to us. The Bible is our weapon against the attacks of our flesh, the world and the devil, but if we are to use this sword, we have to know what the Bible says.
Prayer is a powerful weapon that God has given to us. As Peter was getting ready to be tested, Jesus told him to watch and pray so that he would not enter into temptation. In Matthew 6, He tells us the same thing. We are to prepare for spiritual attacks, before they arrive.
